Spring is on, waters are waking up, and the early-season bite is building across Australia. These are my go‑to flies and tactics for September & October—from Tassie rivers and estuaries to mainland streams and bays. Use this pack as a quick-check before you head out and stock up.

Quick Hatch & Bait Guide

  • Midges: Griffith’s Gnat, midge cluster, buzzer pupa.

  • Caddis: soft hackles, CDC emergers, Stick Caddis nymphs.

  • Early Mayfly: parachute duns, Pheasant Tail/CDC emergers.

  • Damsel/Dragon nymphs: slim olive damsels, small buggers.

  • Whitebait runs (Aug–Oct): white/pearl baitfish, BMS, Surf Candy.

Month‑by‑Month Snapshot

September: Nymph-first in rivers, scuds/damsels in lakes, strong whitebait in estuaries, flathead and bream waking up.
October: Caddis and mayflies increase in rivers, dun hatches start in lakes, whitebait taper late month, bream on topwater in the salt.


Tactics & Gear Tips

  • Fish deeper and steadier early, move shallower as days warm.

  • Leaders: 9–12ft for rivers; 12–15ft for stillwaters. Fluoro for subsurface.

  • Lines: Floating plus intermediate for lakes; sink‑tip for windy banks.

  • Retrieve: Slow with pauses in cold water; speed up for baitfish.
