Regular fly fishing line can certainly be used for a fly leader, but the preference is to use tapered leaders. As the leader is used as a barrier between your fly line and fly, there is no real difference between fly fishing line and regular fishing line other than the taper.
In order to tie on a fly fishing leader, you need to make a loop and pass it through an eyelet. Form an overhand knot on the eyelet. Then extend the loop and pass the lure/hook through it. Lastly, close the knot by pulling the tag and lure/hook in opposite directions. Moisten the line and knot then pull very tight. Trim the tag whenever it is complete.
Fishing leaders attach to a heavier fly line and allow the fly to be cast at a distance without scaring the fish by 'slapping' onto the water, and without it being seen. As it is generally almost as thick as a regular line at the top but bigger down the bottom, it also allows for greater presentation to the water.
Whether you’re just starting out or are a seasoned fisherman, it is a well-known fact that fly fishing is all about presentation — inconspicuously luring in a fish with a fly that looks good enough to eat. This is where fly fishing leaders and tippets can change the game.
The role of fly fishing tippets and leaders in fly fishing
While your regular fly line can be brightly coloured so the angler can see it in most conditions, the fly fishing leader line and tippet connect the fly line to the fly and need to be transparent and more durable — so as not to scare away any fish, allow the fly to float more naturally and ensure the fish you catch remains attached to the longer fishing line.
